A monumental kinetic sculpture of COR-TEN steel, Spyre was originally installed in the Royal Academy’s courtyard during their 2016 Summer Exhibition. Mobilised by perfectly circular rotating joints, Spyre’s five components move independently at differing speeds. Precise, seamless intersections afford the piece an infinite set of formal possibilities: the continually morphing, oscillating arm, appearing to defy the apparent fixity of its material. The 18-metre structure is tipped with a camera which films and records its movements: this restless ‘vision’ plays out in real-time on a screen attached to the façade of Burlington House. Controlled and controlling, a mesmeric, disorienting spatial dynamic results. Following the RA commission, Spyre travelled to the University of Milan in 2017, and then on to Leeuwarden, the 2018 European Capital of Culture.
