Nearing completion at the Emek Medical Centre in Afula, Israel, Beit Shulamit is an inclusive medical facility which seeks to reach across ethnic, geographical and socioeconomic boundaries, offering care to diverse groups of people. Nestled in the foothills of Giv’at Hamoré, the terraced, three-storey structure is embedded within landscaped gardens, offering a sequence of flexible indoor/outdoor spaces affording those within and around the building a direct connection to nature. Dynamic louvered canopies—offering an enriching interplay of light—provide essential shading, reinforcing the environmental efficiency of the site. Led by the research by Nobel Laureate Prof. Aharon Chechanover, the centre houses advanced cancer care facilities including radiation therapy and paediatric oncology. Named after paediatrician, philanthropist and social activist Dr. Shulamit Katzman, the progressive project honours her remarkable legacy.
