Adjacent to the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, the government commissioned UK Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre emerges out of the green open space at the southern end of Victoria Tower Gardens. Designed by Ron Arad Studio, the Memorial commemorates the six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust, and the countless further victims of Nazi persecution. The memorial also honours the resilience and legacy of Holocaust survivors able to build lives in Britain. Comprised of 23 rising patinated bronze walls embedded within a gently sloping hill, the memorial forms 22 immersive pathways corresponding to the number of countries from which victims of the Holocaust originated. These narrow and intimate spaces afford the visitor a solitary spatial experience as they descend into the area housing the Learning Centre. This space, 8 metres below ground, opens to form a poignant, contemplative threshold. In its proximity to Parliament, the UK Holocaust Memorial reinforces the enduring contemporary resonance of one of the darkest chapters in modern civilisation.
